Violet's Gladiolus, 2025 oil on canvas 85 x 65 cmMy great-grandmother Violet, known to us as Nanny Don Don, kept a sacred, eclectic garden. When she passed away in Mudgee in the early ’90s and the house was set for demolition, my parents salvaged what plants they could: gladiolus, violets, a fig tree, geraniums, and clivias. These living heirlooms have travelled across NSW from Yarrabin to Mudgee and now to Tamworth, where my mother carefully tends them. Their seasonal return traces a vibrancy, memory, and spirit that quietly live on.
