Ocean Sounds (Field Recorder and Shell)

Lucy Roleff

Ocean Sounds (Field Recorder and Shell), 2025 oil on linen 32 x 42 cm

'Ocean Sounds' depicts a field recorder and a shell, presented as objects associated with listening, containing, and the transmission of sound. The painting developed from a residency on the west coast of Tasmania, where I spent a week working in a small house at the water’s edge. The pairing reflects my interest in the quiet intelligence of tools and objects of use, both defined by their capacity to receive, hold, and reproduce sound.
