Essence #16, 2023 organic pigments distilled by artist - indigo, fustic, madder, cochineal, weld, encaustic ground and light wax varnish on plywood 74 x 76 cmI am researching and distilling traditional botanical and earth pigments. Making paintings with the unique resonance and malleability of these fresh, yet ancient substances, feels like engaging with with live colour. Pigments: indigo, fustic, madder, cochineal, weld. Encaustic gesso. We see colours through light, yet light itself is invisible. Colours in painting are relatively two dimensional, while there is a phenomenal aspect to these environmentally sensitive colours that I seek to share.
