A recreation of a 1979 photo of my grandparents' Sydney restaurant. An unknown photographer captured different emotions – care, exhaustion, displacement. What's missing: migration histories, Popo and Gong Gong's journey from Chinese aristocracy to restaurateurs, my Finnish mother's journey from Finland to Australia x2, my stepdad rebelling against his Chineseness, me – the blonde grandchild using the wrong Chinese names. All those families made and unmade, all that love, so far away now.
